Boulder, Colorado
SK Design Group is currently working with the University of Colorado at Boulder (UCB) for the re-routing of sanitary sewer lines leaving Sewall Hall and Clare Small. The lines currently flow north down a very steep and unsafe embankment towards and under Boulder Creek, eventually tying into the City of Boulder’s system north of Boulder Creek. Due to the difficulty and potential safety risks of maintaining the existing lines on the steep hillside, UCB is proposing to run a new combined service line from Clare Small and Sewall Hall to the west, under the Sewall service drive and under University Ave, tying into an existing City of Boulder Sanitary Sewer Manhole in a landscape island at the corner of 17th & University.
SK Design coordinated with the City to confirm their system has capacity and is in support of this relocation of flows, with the caveat that replacement of the existing manhole structure might be required because it is an old brick structure with a very deep proposed tie-in and it may not be feasible to keep intact during construction. In total, this project involves installing approximately 850LF of new 8” sanitary sewer piping and multiple new manholes. Access to the site is very difficult and potentially dangerous, and multiple trees and historic walls need to be protected, so SK Design worked with UCB to engage construction contractors early in the design process to inform the design with constructability and safety in mind.
